Book discussion to take place October 27

The West Hempstead Library Mystery Book Discussion will take place on Wednesday, October 27 at 2 p.m. in the library board room.

We will be discussing Mystic River by Dennis Lehane. Copies of the book are available at the circulation desk.

The story begins in 1975 in the blue-collar Boston community of East Buckingham. Three young boys - Sean Devine, Jimmy Marcus, and Dave Boyle - encounter a pair of child molesters. Jimmy and Sean escape, but Dave Boyle spends four days with them and suffers an ordeal that changes his life forever.

Fast forward to the year 2000. Sean is now a homicide investigator, Jimmy is an ex-con who has gone straight and Dave has drifted through a series of dead-end jobs. When Jimmy's oldest daughter Katie is murdered, Sean initiates an investigation that focuses on the entire social structure of East Buckingham. It also raises troubling questions about the possible involvement of Dave, who crossed paths with Katie the night she died.
