New Clancy book available Dec. 7

Tom Clancy's new book, Dead or Alive, will be available on Tuesday, DECEMBER 7.

Dead or Alive is the second book in the Jack Ryan Jr. series. For years, Jack Ryan, Jr. and his colleagues at the Campus have waged an unofficial and effective campaign against terrorists. The most dangerous of these is the Emir, a sadistic killer who has masterminded vicious attacks and has eluded capture by the world's law enforcement agencies. Now the Campus is on his trail. Jack Ryan, Jr. and his cousins, Dominick and Brian Caruso, are determined to catch the Emir and bring him in dead or alive.

Birthday of Melvil Dewey

Books at the West Hempstead Public Library are arranged according to the Dewey Decimal System which was invented by Melvil Dewey. Who was this man?

Melvil was born on December 10, 1851 and was a librarian, educator, editor and author. He helped establish the American Library Association, co-founded and edited Library Journal, and founded the world's first library school at Columbia College (now Columbia University). He is known as the "father of modern librarianship".

The Dewey Decimal System allowed everyone to locate books without assistance from librarians. It organized books into 10 broad categories which are broken down into smaller and smaller topics.

Mr. Dewey died on December 26, 1931 at the age of 80.

New books available in December

New books will be available by best selling authors Jayne Ann Krentz and Tami Hoag on Tuesday, December 28.

In Secrets to the Grave, by Hoag, Marissa Fordham is found brutally murdered, with her young daughter, Haley, resting her head on her mother's chest. Sheriff's detective Tony Mendez faces a puzzle where none of the pieces fit. To assist with his witness, Haley, he calls teacher-turned-child advocate Anne Leone.

Birthday of Arthur C. Clarke

Arthur C. Clarke, known for both his science fiction and scientific and technical writing, was born on December 16, 1917 in England. Best known for 2001: A Space Odyssey, Clarke wrote around 100 books, mainly with the themes of exploration and discovery. In his works, he conveys a sense of wonder about the universe and was the first person to propose communications satellites.

The Science Fiction Writers of America bestowed the title of Grand Master to Clarke. In 1998, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.

Clarke passed away on March 19, 2008.

New bestsellers available December 28

Bestselling authors Dean Koontz and W.E.B. Griffin will have new books available on Tuesday, DECEMBER 28.

In What the Night Knows, by Dean Koontz, homicide detective John Calvino, as a child, was the sole survivor of a family massacre. Though Calvino killed the fiend who did the deed, he has always worried that the killings were demonic in nature and that the evil spirit responsible would return and harm his wife and three children. After Calvino visits the psychiatric ward where a 14-year-old killer is held, something starts to haunt every member of his family. The detective believes he has a deadline to thwart the force bent on repeating the earlier murders.

Bestselling authors Stephen Hunter and Colleen McCullough will have new books available on Tuesday, DECEMBER 28.

Dead Zero, by Stephen Hunter, is the seventh book in the Bob Lee Swagger series. Swagger has to track down an AWOL Marine sniper who resurfaces to complete his last mission. Ray Cruz is still hunting a warlord who has since become America's proudest ally in the Afghan war. Has Ray gone rogue, or insane, or has he turned? Birthday of Mary Higgins Clark

Bestselling suspense writer Mary Higgins Clark was born on December 24, 1929 in New York City. Over 80 million copies of her books have been sold in the United States and two novels have been made into feature films.

Her books are fast paced, lack violence and sex, and deal with terrifying situations. Good always triumphs. She has written some books together with her daughter Carol.

The West Hempstead Public Library owns many of Clark's books. Come and check some out!

Mystery book discussion set for January 19

You've seen the movie, now read the book. Come to the library on Wednesday, JANUARY 19 at 1 p.m. for a book discussion of Blood Work by Michael Connelly.

Though well known for his Harry Bosch detective series, "Blood Work" features ex-FBI agent Terry McCaleb. McCaleb is the recent recipient of a heart transplant. He's living a quiet life on his boat when a newspaper report of his brush with death brings him an unwanted visitor. Graciela Rivers reveals to McCaleb that the anonymous donor of his heart was her murdered sister, Gloria. Even though his doctor objects, McCaleb agrees to look into Gloria's murder but nothing about the random killing makes sense. McCaleb soon realizes that someone is watching his every move and that he is dealing with someone with a very twisted intelligence.

New Macomber book available January 4

The latest book by Debbie Macomber, Family Affair, will be available on Tuesday, JANUARY 4.

After a painful divorce, Lacey Lancaster decides it's time to lay low for a while in her San Francisco apartment with her Abyssinian cat, Cleo. Everything would be wonderful except for her impossible neighbor Jack Walker. When he's not arguing day and night with his girlfriend, begging her to move in with him, he's chasing down his cat named Dog. Ellis Island Opened in 1892

Ellis Island opened on January 1, 1892 as a Federal Immigration Station. Over 40% of Americans can trace their roots to Ellis Island. More than 12 million immigrants passed through their doors from 1892-1954.

Over 3 million people visit this landmark each year.
