We are all anxiously awaiting Hurricane Irene, by monitoring the National Weather Service and local news services, stocking up on batteries, and tying down our trash cans and lawn furniture!
We have been advised by our web hosting service that they are taking precautionary measures to minimize damage, so our library website (www.whplibrary.org) will NOT be in-service from 5 pm on Saturday, August 26 through sometime on Monday August 28, depending upon local conditions.
If you want to know if the library is CLOSED, please call us at 516-481-6591 and press #1 for the Hours. We will post a message on our answering machine. We will also post our status to the Events Calendar on our website and to Facebook and Twitter once our status is known. Remember that these services will only work if the electricity is running both at our location AND at the hosting service, so please be patient!
If you are calling to see if an adult or teen program has been CANCELLED, please wait until an hour or two before the scheduled start time, and ask for the Reference Desk 516-481-6591 x22. For children's programs, call x32.
The weather this wintry season has been particularly trying for us all. We are keeping an eye on tonight's/tomorrow's predicted conditions. Please understand that it is our goal to maintain our services to the public, whenever possible. Decisions to cancel programs or close the library are subject to actual conditions, which we cannot know until close to the time of a program or when conditions become severe.

Al Roker, long-time meteorologist for NBC, will be at the Book Revue in Huntington on Friday, DECEMBER 17, at 7 p.m. to talk about and sign his new book The Midnight Show Murders.
Professional chef turned amateur sleuth Billy Blessing finds himself in trouble when a killing cancels a TV show - and its host - during its debut. A beautiful female TV producer convinces Billy to find the culprit himself and do it on camera. This book is a follow-up to Roker's first mystery, The Morning Show Murders.

For more information, contact the Book Revue at 631-271-1442.
The library will be closed for the Independence Day Weekend,
Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 3rd, 4th and 5th, 2010.
Plan ahead... come in soon to pick up books, music and videos to get you through the long weekend!
Don't forget, we close at 5 pm on Friday.
Stay cool and safe and enjoy your holiday!
The Library will be closed on Monday, January 18. Many Americans celebrate this day by joining with volunteers across the nation on the 2010 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service to make a real in difference in their community.

The West Hempstead Public Library will be shutting our doors briefly while we complete our move to 500 Hempstead Avenue.
Our book and AV dropboxes will be open at both locations for the week beginning on Monday, October 22 until we resume our regular hours on Monday, October 29 at our new location.
Please drop in to see our beautiful new building beginning on October 29. We've missed you!

Big changes are just around the corner! Beginning on Monday September 24, patrons will no longer have physical access to our collections as we begin our move around the corner and down the road to our brand new building at 500 Hempstead Avenue.
To accommodate our patrons, we will strive to maintain limited services during the transition. You may still return items to the circulation desk or in the outdoor drop boxes, and librarians will be on hand to help you find items in other Nassau libraries.
Don't forget that your West Hempstead library card gives you direct access at other Nassau libraries as long as your card has not expired or shows outstanding fines to be paid. We will keep our circulation desk open to allow you to renew your card and pay fines, or to apply for a new card.
During our transition, there will be no fax or copier services available. There will be no access to our internet or word processor computers, but you will still be able to use our online databases for research and reference from your home computer, and you may use computers in other Nassau libraries.
You will find the latest updates on the move in our blog, New & Noteworthy, and you may call 481-6591 or email us for more information.
We expect to reopen in our new facility by the end of October. As we get closer, we will post the exact date. Our phone number 481-6591 will remain the same and will be operational for most of the transition period. Expect a brief interruption when the switchover takes place.
Please be patient!
The Library will be closed on the 4th of July to celebrate our nation's birthday. It's an extra special holiday for us here at WHPLIBRARY because it's also our Director's birthday!
Don't forget that the West Hempstead Civic Association is hosting a Free Concert in Hall's Pond Park on Sunday, July 8 at 6:30 pm with music performed by the The North Shore Pops Concert Band. Call 516-733-0879 for more information.
Stay safe, and enjoy the holiday!
The library is now closed on Sundays until the fall.
The library opens at noon on June 14.
Beginning on July 7, the library will be open on Saturdays from 9 am - 1 pm.
Enjoy your summer!

April is National Poetry Month!
In April of 2007, we celebrate the holidays of Passover and Easter with closings on Friday, April 6 and Sunday, April 8. A late opening is scheduled on April 19 for a staff meeting. On that day, the doors will open at noon. HAPPY SPRING!
Two Tramps in Mud Time (1936)
The sun was warm but the wind was chill.
You know how it is with an April day
When the sun is out and the wind is still,
You're one month on in the middle of May.
But if you so much as dare to speak,
A cloud comes over the sunlit arch,
A wind comes off a frozen peak,
And you're two months back in the middle of March.
by Robert Frost (1874–1963)

The Library will be closed on Monday, January 15 to celebrate the national holiday honoring Dr. King. Learn about his life, test your knowledge with a little quiz or take some action to make this day special.
