Tai Chi for Teens - “Be more inspired!”

Introduction to Tai Chi Chuan
Thursday, May 22 7- 8 p.m.
There is no fee for this unusual program for young adults (grades 6 to 12)

This class will introduce you to the slow, graceful movements of the Tai Chi form and its unique philosophy. The movements are designed to promote good health, body awareness and harmony between the body and the mind. As the movements are gentle, Tai Chi does not require any special athletic ability.

Tai Chi seeks to develop the mind rather than the muscle. Let a different way of moving in the world inspire you! Join us in this age old Chinese “exercise.”

To reserve your place, come to the YA desk, email the Reference Desk, or call 481-6591.

Searching for Ancestors?

Here is an excellent opportunity to get help researching your family history.

Our workshop on Wednesday, April 9 from 10-11:30 am, will focus on the valuable resources your library provides to help you dig through the myriad records that exist scattered in bits and pieces in various hard-to-access records. The Ancestry Library Edition provides a wealth of information in one convenient place and is available only in the library.

Bring your genealogy questions and our experienced reference librarian will help you find the answers to help you identify your kin.

If you can't make it to the workshop, you might consider using our new Book-a-Librarian Service, which allows West Hempstead patrons to reserve a free 30-minute session with a professional librarian to focus on your research interests.

Call the library 481-6591 or email us for more information.

Upcoming Book Chat: The Maytrees

Author, Annie Dillard
In her review of The Maytrees in Bookpage, Linda White comments "If you have not been enthralled by the details of a moth flying into a candle flame in Holy the Firm, or enchanted by a silken string of spiderweb across a coffee mug in Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, then you should slow down and read carefully. For Dillard takes the most amazing facts and lays them bare for all to see."

So, what is this book about? Scott Simon, of National Public Radio, calls it "a quirky story of the Maytrees' fractured marriage" written in a short, simple, poetic style. Listen to the NPR interview and hear Annie Dillard read a passage from the novel.

Pick up a copy of The Maytrees, available now at the circulation desk. Register at the reference desk or call us at 481-6591 to let us know that you will join our discussion at 7 pm in the second floor Conference Room on May 1.

Leap Day 2008

February 29, 2008 is a Leap Day, also known as Leap Year Day.

(photo downloaded from Leapzine.com)

Browsing the Internet is a great way to learn about both the science and the traditions associated with Leap Year. Using a search engine, like Google, when you enter the words "Leap Year" you get approximately 2,180,000 results, far more than most people would have the time to research. A quick review of the ten on the first page and a cursory look at the ten on the second page gives a taste of what can be found on the subject.

To help you focus your research, Google has included additional search terms at the bottom of the results page under the heading "Searches related to: Leap Year". Use these hints to modify your own search terms, based on your specific interests. For example, adding "trivia" to your search, reveals a set of appproximately 110,000 results or adding "traditions" reveals another 138,000 results.

The Yahoo search engine also provides related searches under the heading "Also try:..."

These are some of my favorite picks:

We will select the book for discussion based on feedback offered by the March 13 Book Chat participants during our Long Island Reads meeting, so stay tuned. We'll update our library blog and the website and post flyers in the library with the title of the book. Copies of the book will be available at the Circulation desk by April 1.

We also welcome book choices suggested by other readers in the community who plan to join our group in the future. Check our website for books we have read and discussed in the past. Please email or call the reference desk at (516) 481-6591 to register for a book discussion or to be added to our mailing list.

WH Scholarship Applications - 2008

(WHCSF) awards scholarships to residents of the WH Union Free School District, students from the Island Park School District who attend WHHS, and graduates of WHHS who are continuing their education beyond high school.

This year, each individual award will be two thousand dollars ($2000). The awards (3 or more) are based on character, potential and financial need. The Selection Committee has the option to grant (1) single award based solely on character and potential, without regard to financial need.

Students may pick up applications in the Young Adult corner of the library. They are located in a bin near the FAFSA application forms.
