ABOUT US

About Us

Welcome to the West Hempstead Public Library Children's page. We encourage our young patrons, infants through fifth graders to enjoy a wide range of fun and educational activities we have scheduled year-round in our Children's Room.

We have over 40,000 children's books; we have magazines, audio books, music CDs and DVDs which circulate regularly. We have 3 game computers and 2 research computers, which have internet access, word processing and many useful databases for homework help. There are puzzles, puppets, board books and toys always available for playing. We offer year-round programming, including storytime, movement and musical programs, arts and crafts programs, book chats, yoga and much more.

We also welcome district schools for tours of the children's room, and local nursery and preschools for visits. Please continue to read about all we have to offer and our policies below.

In addition the West Hempstead Public Library is a Family Place Library, a national initiative of Libraries for the Future and the Middle County Public Library.

Birth Date Verification

The Children's Room requires proof of age for all children, birth through preschool to register for our programs.

Child Safety

The West Hempstead Public Library welcomes children and strives to provide a warm and pleasant atmosphere for them. We welcome you and your child and invite your child to

  • learn from an abundance of stimulating library resources
  • experience enjoyment without interfering with other library users
  • and, ultimately, feel safe in this, a public library
  • Young children left alone while in the library, even for a short time, often become frightened or anxious. It is a public place and anyone can come in.

Please safeguard your children by insuring that they are properly supervised. Your help will make everyone's library experiences positive ones.

    Unattended Child Policy

    1. While in the library, children nine years old or younger shall at all times be attended and adequately supervised by a responsible person (parent, caregiver or mature adolescent).
    2. Children who are ten years or older may be unaccompanied but, as always, must observe library rules.
    3. Parents, not library staff, are responsible for the behavior of their children. Disruptive behavior cannot be tolerated.
    4. When the safety of an unattended child is in doubt, the library staff will attempt to contact parents. If the parents are unavailable, the staff will contact the Nassau County Police.
    5. Violations of this policy are grounds for suspension of library privileges.
    Definitions

  • unattended child: child from preschool through age nine left in the Library unaccompanied by a responsible person (parent, adult caregiver or mature adolescent)
  • disruptive behavior: behavior that represents a physical danger to the child or to others, or behavior that may serve to interfere with other library users or staff
  • Disruptive behavior is behavior that is inappropriate in a library setting. Types of inappropriate behavior may be but are not limited to: running, throwing materials, eating, loud or abusive talking, excessive socializing, moving furniture, abusing or defacing library materials.

    Getting a Library Card

All children grade five and younger must come with a parent or legal guardian to obtain a library card. The child must be able to print his/her first and last name on the application.

    Photo Release

In the event a West Hempstead Public Library staff member photographs a children's program, please advise the children's desk if you do not want your child photographed and possibly appearing on the library website or library-sponsored websites.

    Game Computer Policy

The Children's Room Game Computer is available to all children ages 3 through grade five (5). A parent or adult caretaker at least 18 years of age must stay with a child under 3rd grade.

A parent or legal guardian is required to read this policy and sign a statement of permission for the child to use the computer. Parents/Guardians assume responsibility for any misuse or damage to the equipment during their child's session.

The parent or child must present a valid Nassau County library card at the time of computer use. This card or the child's card is kept at the children's room desk during the period of use. The child must sign in and out at the children's room desk for each session. A child may use the computer for half an hour or a maximum of one hour, if no-one is waiting. Only one child per computer. West Hempstead patrons have priority.

You may make an appointment by phone or in person no more than 24 hours in advance. If you do not follow the rules of this agreement, your privilege to use the computer will be taken away.

The computers are turned off 30 minutes before closing.

    Research Computer Policy

Research Computer use is for children in grade one (1) through grade five (5). A parent or adult caretaker at least 18 years of age must stay with a child under third grade.

A parent or legal guardian is required to read this policy and sign a statement of permission for the child to use the computer. Parents/Guardians also assume responsibility for any misuse or damage to the equipment during their child's session.

    Free Museum Passes

The West Hempstead Public Library purchases Family Passes to museums that our library members may borrow free of charge. Many of these museum are suitable for children. We encourage you to visit the museum websites to learn about the many exhibits and activities offered and to check for special showtimes and hours.

The Long Island Children's Museum is by far the favorite of our Family Pass collection! We should remind you that you may reserve the pass as early as one month in advance,(ie., on Feb 28, you may reserve for March 28) but you may do this only once in a 12 month period for each museum. You may, however, borrow any particular pass as often as you like on a "walk-in" basis, meaning that if you call the Reference Desk (481-6591) in the morning and we tell you it is available, you may use it that day.
