Internet and Wireless Services
- The West Hempstead Public Library provides open access to the Internet and Microsoft Office software to all persons 18 years of age or older who present a Nassau County library card, or other valid ID. Proof of age must be provided if requested by the librarian. Use restrictions apply to those under the age of 18 because the Internet is not filtered on the adult machines.
Preschool children through fifth grade will use computers in the Children's Room. Children's Room Computer Guidelines apply to them. Once in sixth grade, children use adult public computers.
- To use or view the Internet on library computers, minors under the age of 18 are required to complete the Internet User Agreement Form that is kept on file at the reference desk. A parent/guardian must also sign this Internet User Agreement Form in a librarian's presence to acknowledge their consent to the use of unfiltered Internet machines. Minors who have registered for Internet Use must present their tagged library card each time they seek access to the Internet.
- Free Internet connections are available from anywhere in the library with your compatible laptop or wireless device when the library is open.
You must have a device equipped with an 802.11b-compatible wireless card. If you have any questions about the compatibility of your equipment, please consult the product guide, the equipment manufacturer, or the place of purchase. We are unable to provide technical support for customer equipment. Using your computer's network utilities, look for the wireless network named "Reference"
or "Community Room" to find the strongest connection. Our wireless network does not require a password to connect.
- LIMITATIONS & DISCLAIMERS : Like most public hot spots, the library's wireless network is not secure. We recommend that you not transmit sensitive information using the wireless network and that you have firewall and anti-virus software installed on your equipment.
Library staff is not able to provide technical assistance and no guarantee can be provided that you will be able to make a wireless connection.
The Library assumes no responsibility for the safety of equipment or for laptop configurations, security, or data files resulting from connection to the Library's network.
