Director & Staff
Director ext.24 - Regina Mascia
The Director implements Board policies. Under broad policy guidance and direction from the Library Board, she performs the professional and administrative duties involved in planning, developing, implementing and directing public library services for the West Hempstead Public Library. These duties include budget preparation, evaluation, personnel, collection development, community relations and facility maintenance.
Our business manager keeps everything running smoothly. She assists the Director in her duties; she pays the bills, processes job applications, manages the use of our public spaces, prepares reports, and interfaces with the public on behalf of the Director.
Our circulation staff greets patrons as they enter the library. In addition to checking materials in and out, they also renew materials, call you when your book is ready to be picked up, issue and renew library cards, update patron records, collect fines and answer the telephone.
During regular business hours, designated staff members provide fax and notary services.
The Children's Room services infants through Grade 5. We have a wonderful space that includes a program room where storyhours and craft programs are hosted. We also have books, magazines, CDs, DVDs and videos, puzzles, puppets and a giant hippo full of board books for our littlest tots. Computers are available for playing games and for doing homework.
Teens/Young Adult ext.18
The YA Department provides services to youth in Grades 6-12. We have our own area with comfortable chairs, books, magazines, books on tape or CD and graphic novels. The career collection is right as you enter our new space. Programs, like the popular graphic novel club and the S.A.T. course, are planned to meet the needs of today's teens.
Two major functions of the Reference Librarians are to manage the print and online collections by selecting and removing materials on a timely basis to keep the the content relevant, and to assist patrons with their information needs by answering their reading and reference questions. In our reader advisory and reference roles, we develop bibliographies and research guides, help patrons find and select books and other materials, and order interlibrary loan materials from other libraries. We also assist patrons in the use of the online catalog, research databases and the public access computers. We maintain the library website, prepare the newsletter, and manage the online calendar of events. We also handle program and museum pass registration.
Ever wonder how a book gets on the shelf? The technical services department performs behind-the-scenes work. They do the actual ordering of books selected by the librarians. Each book is then processed, stamped, covered, labeled and barcoded. Books are mended here, if possible. Faxes are sent and received in this office.
Programming (Adults) ext.13
Our program coordinator plans all of the Adult Programs, including trips and entertainment.
Our staff of pages shelve the books and "shelf read" to make sure that each book is in the correct spot so that it may be easily found.
Our custodians keep our building clean and neat and help to ensure our health and safety.
