Programs are open to West Hempstead residents. Space permitting, non-residents may participate.
Programs are for students in Grades 6-12 unless otherwise noted.

2008 Summer Reading Program

“Metamorphosis @ Your Library” 

Stop by the Young Adult Desk beginning Monday, June 9 to sign up and pick up a bag with goodies to get you started. Read and review 4 books by 5 p.m. Friday, August 8 and you will be invited to a pizza party to be held Thursday, August 21 from 6:30 -8:30 p.m.

We will have prizes at the party in addition to "Magic Beyond Imagination" entertainment. Each Monday in July, one person will win a $10 Borders Bookstore gift certificate. The winner is drawn from the book reviews already submitted.

Remember, you have to join the club and submit your reviews to be eligible! Any West Hempstead student entering grades 6 through 12 in September may join the Young Adult Summer Reading Club.


Children’s Room Summer Reading Club Volunteers

High school students interested in volunteering to work with young children during the Children's Summer Reading Club may apply in the Children's Room before June 20. A commitment of three hours a week for six weeks, June 30 through August 8, is required. Hours may be applied to Community Service.

A $2 materials fee is required at registration.

2008 Best Young Adult Book

The Michael L. Printz Award is given for a book that "...exemplifies literary excellence in young adult literature."

The 2008 winner is The White Darkness by Geraldine McCaughrean. Fourteen-year-old Symone travels to Antarctica with her eccentric uncle Victor. Victor is willing to sacrifice anything and anyone to find Symmes' Hole, an entrance to what he believes is our hollow planet.

S.A.T. PREPARATION WORKSHOP

This is a six-week math and verbal course to help high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors prepare for the S.A.T. given in November. Classes will be held Thursdays, September 18, 25, October 2, 16, 23 and 30 from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. There will be no class October 9.

An $80 check, payable to Melissa Bielawski, is required at registration. Please note that the class is limited to 30 students, so register early!

Students are required to bring to class McGraw Hill's SAT, 2009 edition, by Christopher Black and Mark Anestis. The ISBN is 978-0071592284. (This has been updated since the summer 2008 newsletter.) Please be sure to purchase the book before the first session since it will be used extensively in class.
