The West Hempstead Public Library is a School District Public Library and primarily serves the residents of the West Hempstead Union Free School District. Library cards will be issued to all residents of the West Hempstead School District who present acceptable documentation. An adult library card will be issued to all eligible adults who are 18 years of age. Resident children capable of printing their first and last names will be issued juvenile library cards.

To obtain an adult library card, a person must present 2 forms of current identification clearly stating their name and West Hempstead address (e.g. drivers license, bank statement, utility bill, credit card bill, etc.) One of these must be a photo ID. Final authority as to whether an address is located in the district will be up to the West Hempstead School District clerk.

A non-resident business owner or property owner will be offered a three-year card with full privileges upon producing a current tax bill. Non-resident students who attend school within the library district will receive a one-year card. Non-residents working in the school district are entitled to a one-year card when they furnish a letter of proof of employment from their employer on company letterhead. This card will not receive direct access privileges.

The West Hempstead Public Library is a member of the Nassau Library System, a cooperative library system comprised of 54 member libraries and a Service Center. You may use your West Hempstead library card at other libraries in the Nassau County library system for some, but not all services. Only the library cardholder can use his/her card to check out materials and use library services.

Circulation Policies

GENERAL
All items are due before the library opens on the morning following the official due-date. New audio-visual materials owned by West Hempstead may not be placed on the hold shelf. Non-residents may borrow West Hempstead audio-visual materials that have been in our collection one year or more (based on purchase date).

RESERVE AND INTERLOAN POLICY
If an item is not on the shelf, a librarian can enter an interloan request for a library cardholder. Patrons may also request items themselves using the online catalog. There are no fees for interloan requests. Interloan requests for non-West Hempstead card holders must be picked up at the library their card was issued at.

If there is an item that is not in the Nassau or Suffolk system, a librarian will look outside both systems.  If the item is available worldwide, we will ask the other library to send it out.  In some instances fees apply and will be discussed with the patron prior to processing the interloan.  Non-West Hempstead cardholders must have the book requested by the library that their card was issued at.

Some audio-visual materials, interloaned from another Nassau or Suffolk library, may be subject to policies of that library which differ from our own.  The circulation staff will notify the patron when the item arrives by phone or email. Items not picked up within a reasonable time period will be returned to the lending library.

DELINQUENT PATRONS
A West Hempstead patron will not be allowed to borrow additional items if there are $10.00 or more in fines or if there are any overdue DVDs or videos on their record. A patron with a non-WHPL library card will not be allowed to borrow any West Hempstead materials if there are overdue items and/or fines on his/her record.
